EAGLES 4 Godmanchester 3...
The Reds last home game of the season ended with a hard fought win against Rovers. Neither team had much to play for and the evening was very quiet around the sides of the pitch.
The Reds went about their normal game and kept Rovers on the back foot for the opening period, but when Rovers broke, they did so with pace and were a real threat.
But it was the Reds who opened the scoring when MB , who has been nothing short of tremendous over the last couple of months, threaded another ball through to AM, he turned and squared the ball for the oncoming JH, who lashed his shot in off the bar. 1-0.
Rovers popped the ball around as they tried to a get a firmer grip on the game, but it was the Reds who struck again when JH nodded home.2-0.
Cambourne were seemingly in cruise control when a penalty was awarded for a foul just inside the box on AM. AH stepped up and his spot kick was well saved by the Goddy keeper.
Minutes later a decent through ball from the Goddy number 8 saw the attacker race through and the Reds keeper got there second and a penalty was rightly awarded. The number 8 stepped up and the Reds keeper dived to his left and pushed the ball away to safety.
Cambourne went up the other end and AM tucked away neatly to extend the Reds lead to 3-0.
Just before half time, Rovers broke and when the initial shot was cleared, it fell kindly to another Rovers player who shifted his feet very quick and his left foot shot sailed over the oncoming reds keeper. HT 3-1
The second half saw Rovers pick up the pace and they switched their wide men over, and it paid dividends within ten minutes as they got in behind the fullback and crossed and scored.3-2
The game was a midfield battle as Rovers went in search of the equaliser and they came close a few times. But the Reds showed the side of them that had seen them pick up some decent wins over the last few weeks, and when the ball was swung over from the left with 11 minutes to go, JH nodded in his thrid of the game to regain the two goal advantage for the Reds.4-2.
Rovers still threatened as the game became stretched, and with 3 minutes remaining, some head tennis follwed a corner and the big attacker outjumped everyone in the centre and nodded over the keeper 4-3
The game fizzled out for the remaining minutes as both teams seemed to stop, not the usual back and forth urgency. The Reds running out 4-3 winners.
Well done Reds, we have played much better than this, as i`m sure Rovers have, but a good result from a lot of hard work again, against another very good team.
The teams will do it all over again on Sunday morning in what is both teams final game of the season.
The Reds have now guaranteed themselves at least a 5th placed finish, fourth is not out of the question, but Soham would need to drop points in their final game and the Reds would need to beat Rovers again, which will not be easy in itself.
See you Sunday REDS & ROVERS.
